The Growing Problem of Mail Theft and How to Prevent It

Updated: Mar 25, 2023

Package theft unfortunately isn't a new issue, but it's becoming increasingly more common. A porch pirate is someone who steals packages that do not belong to them. They are especially active around the holiday season when people are ordering packages online rather than going to shops to avoid long lines.

Unfortunately, it doesn't matter what is in the package; if they think they can make use of what's inside, they'll take it. Mail theft is similar, but the target is mailboxes and couriers, which can lead to an increase in check fraud, identity theft, and even sales of the stolen items on the dark web.

If you want to protect yourself against this kind of theft, here are some steps you can take:

Tip #1 - Hold at Location

When ordering a package, see if you can arrange for it to be held at a location once it arrives at its destination. If you would like your package to be held somewhere, make sure you contact the facility to learn how long they can keep it before returning it to the sender.

NOTE: Confirm if there are any fees for requesting a delivery to be held at location.

Tip #2 - Have Package Delivered to an Amazon Locker

If you're sending a package with Amazon, why not take advantage of Amazon Lockers? Have it rerouted to the nearest locker and make collecting your package more convenient! This is free.

Tip #3 - Hold at the Post Office

Get in touch with your local post office and ask them if they can keep it for you until you're able to come and pick it up. This is free.

Tip #4 - Add a Signature Requirement to the Package

Include a signature requirement with the package so you can be sure it's delivered to the intended recipient before it's released (even if that recipient is you). Confirm if there are any fees associated with adding a signature requirement for the package.

Tip #5 - Get a P.O. Box

Consider getting a P.O. Box at your local post office. It's an easy solution that'll keep your mail secure. Confirm if there are any fees associated with getting a P.O. Box.

Tip #6 - USPS' Informed Delivery

Check out the USPS's 'Informed Delivery' service for an easy and free way to stay updated on what mail you can expect in your mailbox. After signing up, you'll get notifications about what mail is headed your way. It's important to note that not every single piece of mail will appear in the notifications, but they will still provide you with a great overview of what will soon be delivered to your mailbox!

In Conclusion

Make sure to be consistent in checking your mail often to ensure you don't miss any important pieces of mail! If there is mail you are expecting and it has yet to arrive, contact your local post office.

I agree! I think that was the best thing that USPS could have created. It is really helpful when I'm expecting an important item in the mail.
